Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) which is a growing water sport. It offers a great way to explore water bodies such as lakes, rivers, and oceans while getting a full-body workout. Hers's 7 SUP safety tips if you are getting started.
SUP has been growing in popularity for a number of reasons.
Accessibility: SUP is relatively easy to learn, making it accessible to people of all ages and skill levels. The learning curve is not as steep as some other water sports, which encourages more people to give it a try. I highly recommend lessons. They were my best investment early in my SUP experience.
Versatility: SUP can be practiced in various water conditions, from calm lakes to ocean waves. It can be used for leisurely paddling, fitness training, yoga sessions, and even surfing in some cases.
Full-Body Workout: Paddling engages multiple muscle groups, including the core, legs, back, and arms. It provides an effective and enjoyable way to stay active and improve overall fitness.
Connection with Nature: SUP allows you to immerse yourself in nature and enjoy peaceful moments on the water. It's a great way to observe wildlife, enjoy sunsets, and explore scenic areas.
Social Activity: SUP can be enjoyed individually or with friends and family. Group paddleboarding sessions, races, and events have become popular, forming a sense of community.
Low-Impact Exercise: Unlike high-impact sports, SUP is gentle on the joints, making it suitable for people recovering from injuries or looking for a low-impact workout option
Equipment Variety: There are different types of SUP boards designed for various activities, such as touring, racing, yoga, and surfing. This variety allows individuals to choose a board that suits their preferences and intended use.
1. It's recommended to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) that is the correct size.

2. Adult supervision is essential. Always carry a phone in a waterproof case you get into difficulty.

3. Always wear a leash.

My preference is to use a QR (quick release) belt. The Bluefin Releash is made for safety and is a great utility belt with multiple uses.

4. Always check the weather. There are plenty of apps you can use to help you with planning a safe paddle.

5. Educate & communicate! Basic safety and best practices could be life changing.

6. Stay close to shore if new to paddleboarding.

7. RNLI flags. Know your flags!
