Don’t be afraid to start your fitness journey!

A friend was encouraging me to do some exercise other than running and invited me to go some gym sessions with her, but I wasn't very keen.

I started running a few years ago but the gym was a scary place to me. I had a vision of members all being very fit, strong, comparing each other. It had also become a barrier as the result of a bad experience. I was once asked if I had something contagious during a psoriasis flare up while at a swimming pool which had been a very upsetting experience so it became somewhere I avoided.

Reluctantly I decided to give the gym a try. I quickly realised others are not interested in you; they are focused on themselves. After enjoying a few sessions with my friend, I started to book sessions and go alone. I found the staff to be most helpful and friendly and it was no longer a barrier or a scary place.

I was offered a body test, which was very informative and helped me to set some new personal health goals such as improving my muscle and bone mass which is something very important to me with a long history of psoriatic arthritis, some worrying family history and being in my late forties.

From finding the gym a barrier, I am now a community champion for Aneurin Leisure and encourage people to attend and see for themselves. I also explain the exercise referral scheme if that may be suitable for them where they will receive a discounted membership and lots of support from the friendly team.

I find the body composition Inbody test invaluable to help keep me on track with my personal goals. Health is about far more than a number on the scales.
